Every week a dozen villages gather to mingle in a hive of activity they call the “Tîrg,” a word that means simply ‘Trade.’ Here the barter economy exchanges not only corn for salt and horses for cash, but news from relatives who have married away to other villages. A half day’s labor may be swapped for a small piglet, and news of a pending wedding traded for gossip about the mayor.
Attendance at the Tîrg is more faithful than at church.
