
Another idiosyncratic village tradition is the “Merry Cemetery” in Sapinta. Started by Stan Ioan Patras, the tradition has continued over two generations of carving sometimes irreverant poetry to eulogize those buried there.
A recent grave marker says:
I’m Nofor’s Anuta, and I leave my parents longing,
The vineyard cuckoo sang to me on one dreadful morning, I was struck from this world by an auto motoring, Now O sister and O mother you will be forever sobbing, For God has loved me so that he took me to his breast.
