On August 15th, a pilgrimage to the Moisei monastery marks the Ascension of Mother Mary. Unmarried girls are the focus of attention, as they represent Mary in our midst. Two days of chanting and singing, circling and praying, candlelight and monks’ robes leaves no mystery as to why a quarter of a village’s girls will bear the name of Maria.
